Webinar “Fishing for Clues to Report Adverse Effects, Injuries and Poisonings in ICD-10-CM” Tuesday, July 26, 2022 - Make Your Revenue Smarter

Unintentional injuries are the fourth most common cause of death in the US amongst all age groups and the number one cause of death in people of all genders and races for ages 1-44. In 2020 a total of 200,955 people died from unintentional injuries. The leading causes of death due to injury in the United states are poisoning followed by motor vehicle accidents and gunshots. In the midst of the opioid epidemic and the gun violence we hear about everyday this trend seems likely to continue. It is ever more important for us to correctly report these conditions.

Yet our responsibilities are made more difficult because the injury, poising and external causes section is one of the largest in ICD-10 CM. Understanding how to accurately report 7th characters, sequencing codes, and accurately reporting adverse effects encompass numerous challenges. Coders can spend quite a bit of time fishing for the right details to select the correct code. In this session we will share most commonly asked questions and offer quick clues to guide you through the process of coding injuries and poisonings.

Attendees will be able to:
• Utilize learned information to make appropriate coding selections for adverse effects, injuries, and poisonings;
• Describe the differences in poisonings and adverse effects;
• Explain when and how to report activity and place of occurrence codes;
• Describe key documentation best practices to help improve the health and security of the medical record.
