Tracheostomy Status vs Attention to Tracheostomy - Make Your Revenue Smarter

I remember that you explained the difference between tracheostomy status and attention to tracheostomy. Can you please clarify the difference between the two so that I can make sure I am correct          (Anonymous)

V44.0 is tracheostomy status – Artificial Opening Status (without need for care per the ICD manual).

V55.0 is attention to trach: – Attention to artificial opening (requiring attention or management per ICD manual).  Just because the appliance is gone does not negate the use of this code.  The appliance in and of itself is not the opening.  The appliance may be removed and care still needed for the trach hole (i.e. toilet/cleaning to promote healing).
