Remaining HIPAA Compliant in the Digital Age

Living in the age of digital age comes with a lot of conveniences. Most anything you could want to see or know is yours to explore at literally the click of a finger. Access to the internet has opened the world to us in a way our forefathers never could have imagined. While this has had a positive impact on the way we lead our lives and interact, it has come with some serious consequences. Turn your television to any news station and at some point, you are likely to hear about a bank or company or healthcare facility being hacked, and all of the digital information being stolen. This is such a common occurrence it doesn’t surprise us anymore. In fact, most us know someone who has had their private information stolen or have even experienced it ourselves – it’s a scary prospect.
That is why it is now more important than ever that we in healthcare strive to protect and secure patient’s private health information; fortunately for us we have a clear guide in how to do that. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) has given us rules, regulations and guidelines that we MUST FOLLOW to keep our patients’ information secure.
In this session we will break down HIPAA compliance by walking through the ins and outs of the regulation and how to implement correct handling of PHI into your daily routine.
