Recalculating the Code Set- ICD-10 CM Updates for 2022

GPS devices are useful tools we are all familiar with. Many of us rely on them to get us to where we need to go. They are incredibly helpful tools that provide us with the best advice and direction for the journey ahead. A GPS is programmed to get us where we want to be in the safest and most efficient way. As we drive or walk along, we listen intently for the next direction and then we proceed on our way, content in the knowledge that somehow, we  will get where we need to go. But every now and again we run into a road block or maybe we miss a turn and we hear that reassuring voice say, “Recalculating route”. The GPS then proceeds to quickly update our route.

Our yearly updates to ICD-10 CM are a bit like a GPS that has recalculated. Every year on October 1st our ICD-10 CM code set recalculates our route with  code additions, deletions and revisions as well as with updates to our Guidelines. In this session we are going to walk through the recalculated code set for 2022 both in the ICD-10 CM code set and in the ICD-10 guidelines.

Participants will:

  • Identify the numerous coding updates, revisions and deletions and apply learned knowledge in selecting diagnosis codes
  • Recognize potential documentation needs required by new and revised codes
  • Describe guideline revisions and apply this knowledge
