CPT© Coding Critical Care
CMS defines critical care as “direct delivery by a physician or physicians of medical care for a critically ill or critically injured patient.” This service involves a high complexity of medical decision making. From a coding perspective, reporting this service appropriately for the physician’s office or hospital outpatient setting can be quite complex and confusing.
